Light filled Music room extension

The primary focus of this architectural design project was to create a bespoke music room extension to house our client’s newly commissioned organ — a unique, custom-built musical instrument. From the outset, we recognised that the new space needed to be equally distinctive in both design and craftsmanship.

The music room extension is a single storey side extension to the original property, constructed from a Glulam timber frame with a highly glazed gable end, incorporating passive sustainable design principles. A carefully detailed Cedar brise-soleil allows the low winter sun to warm the interior naturally, while providing effective solar shading during the summer months.

To the rear, projecting angled windows were designed to frame and direct views toward new and engaging areas of the garden. These openings are accentuated with dark handmade ceramic tile surrounds, adding depth, texture, and visual interest to the façade.

Additional architectural design works included replacing the existing entrance porch with a new single storey Glulam-framed Porch extension, complemented by a composite timber and aluminium front door. The flat garage roof was reimagined as a pitched roof, creating valuable attic storage and providing an ideal platform for a photovoltaic solar array and advanced battery storage system, enabling improved energy efficiency and sustainability.

The existing detached property sits within the Headington Hill Conservation Area under the control of Oxford City Council, so a robust and carefully considered planning submission was essential. A comprehensive landscaping and planting scheme was also developed, including new boundary fences, hedges, and strategically positioned trees to enhance privacy and complement the architectural design.

Working collaboratively with Interior designers Rogue Designs, we delivered a comprehensive architectural, interior design, and landscape package, fully managed from concept through to completion.
